研究指出，新喀里多尼亞特有種烏鴉新喀鴉能透過腦中想像，將嫩枝編成掛鉤及製作其他工具，顯示這種聰明的鳥類能將成功的設計傳給下一代。

研究共同作者奧克蘭大學（University of Auckland）語言、認知和文化實驗室主任泰勒（Alex Taylor）表示：「簡單來說，烏鴉能單靠心中對工具的想像，改變工具的設計。」

泰勒和同僚捕捉8隻野生烏鴉，訓練牠們將不同大小的紙片投入販賣機，以得到獎賞。但只有在投入特定大小的紙片時，才給牠們獎賞。

The study pointed out that New Caledonia's endemic crows, new crows, can illuminate their branches and make other tools through the imagination of the brain, showing that this smart bird can pass successful designs to the next generation.

Researcher co-author Alex Taylor, director of the Language, Cognition and Culture Laboratory at the University of Auckland, said: "In a nutshell, crows can change the design of tools by relying on their imagination of tools."

Taylor and his peers captured eight wild crows and trained them to put different sizes of paper into the vending machine for reward. However, they are only rewarded when they put in a certain size of paper.

When they are trained to know what to do to get the benefit, the experiment goes into Part 2. The crow who got the big card would tear the card into the similar size and shape that he had previously won.

Taylor said: "These crows can reproduce tools without reference. They have no other tools to refer to when making cards."

Taylor said that the only way for crows to copy tools is through "the model of tool design in the brain."
